A selection of letters from readers of Numismatic News to editor Dave Harper Like many other collectors, when the state quarter program was started I put a roll from each state and mint away for the future. I recently realized that I had a significant amount of money tied up in quarters that were going no where price wise. Coin Clubs have vanished just the way movie theaters, phone booths and some local newspapers have, but not for the same reasons. I have in the past thought about this and I had to think about this again for a while before I decided, but with certain reservations, that the U.S. Mint should not be privatized. Eight years ago my future wife and I decided we needed a career change. While working a night shift at the newspaper, a friend doing freelance work in our office told us about the company he worked for, Krause Publications, and suggested we might like to look into it further. The rumors have been flying fast and furious ever since election day: Who will be the next director of the United States Mint? Instead of just stuffing some bills in an envelope and handing it to someone, get more creative. In mid-November the U.S. Mint unexpectedly suspended nearly all gold and platinum products and then brought them back after less than one day with mostly lower prices. Despite commemorating virtually every other major war with a national monument and national commemorative coin, neither exists for World War I and that is a great oversight and disservice to the many who served our nation and the cause of democracy. On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human being to travel more then 250,000 miles from earth and set foot on the moon. The event was watched by over half a billion people around the world. |
